thank God I am not in Fallujah

"Thanks to everyone for caring about me. Leaving my compadres in Fallujah was the hardest thing I have ever done. I felt like a loser, like I let them down. It helps to be here in Germany, they remind us daily that we are somebody."

back to Iraq

"The other day we got to do some MORE training for urban warfare. This time with modified M4 assault rifles that fire "sim rounds." Which are basically paint balls that look like bullets. We got to do that all day and night, it was alot of fun. We recommended that we need to do it some more. Hopefully it will happen soon. Alot of our guns are now dead-lined. We had civilian armorer's come in and inspect all of our machine guns and assault rifles. Approximatly 80% of the were put on deadline. Meaning they cannot be fired until they are fixed. They said alot of the barrels were no good and needed new ones. Our own armorer's are talented enough to keep the guns up and running, but the better trained civilian weapon experts saw alot of flaws that our guys could not see. So, at least all of our guns will be in top condition when we go back to Iraq."

'interrogation'

Al-Naqib proceeded to answer the questions and while he was mentioning some statistics regarding numbers of weapons and vehicles a council member expressed his concern about mentioning such critical details in a public session since it might be of benefit to terrorists. Others agreed and a long argument followed on whether to stick to general issues without details or shutting down the camera. Al-Naqib said that he couldn't possibly answer the questions without the relevant details. After some commotion, other members suggested a future session which would be closed. Every single member wanted to offer his personal suggestion, and one said that it was almost time for Iftar (breaking the fast) and that they would better postpone the whole meeting and go home. Hussein Al-Sadr jokingly said that time was no problem since the Prime Minister could invite them all at his residence for the Iftar and if he didn't, they would just invite themselves

My daughters teacher

when my wife told me this morning that she is going to stop paying the school monthly fees I told her “no we must keep paying the school so they can keep doing their job and keep open”, we don’t know when we will send her back again, maybe tomorrow, maybe next month, maybe next spring, but we are going to send her to school as soon as we think its safe and we must work to make it safe, all of us by all means.

those who refrain from voting would 'enter Jahannam (Hell)'.

Al-Safi strongly denied rumours appearing in the media last week that the Marji'iya or Sistani had prepared or endorsed any slate of candidates. This following attempts by several Islamic parties in the south (such as the Da'wa party, SCIRI, and Hizbollah) to mislead Shi'ite Iraqi voters that they are backed and supported by the Marji'iya, or that voting for candidates from these specific parties is an 'order' from the Sayyid (Sistani). Some have even presented forged statements with Sistani's seal on them to convince potential voters.

P.S Sorry about the lack of grammatical cohesiveness

In less than 24 hours I will be home. Back to the safe, comfort of my hometown.... I'm scared, nervous, excited, antsy, and if you ask me in a few hours, after waiting with a million other Army kids to go through customs and all the other fun briefings, I'll probably be bored as hell. But it's two weeks of freedom. Thank GOD!

Baghdad Blogger does Washington

In the run-up to the Iraq conflict, a web diary from Baghdad captured a global following. Its author, Salam Pax, reluctantly supported the invasion. Now he journeys for the first time to the city where the decision was taken for war - and asks if it's already too late for freedom in his country

"I can't make up my mind about how this trip makes me feel. I came here ready to be indignant and angry but all you find is people who realise the gravity of the mistakes made over Iraq. The only person who seems to be incapable of admitting that any mistakes were made is the guy sitting in the White House."

"I wake up when she mentions Dick Cheney. She seems to really like America's vice-president. "Cheney is a very big man, not in the physical sense," she says. Thanks for the clarification."

"Would John Kerry bring those people back into the game? Does that even matter now? Is it already too late?"

It's never too late, Pax, never.

Ramadan requirements

In these nine days of this Ramadan's age, there was much of violence in my city. There are several events (military operations, cars bombed, mortar rocket attacks and etc.), every day in all the past days of Ramadan except the first day of Ramadan. Most of those events are not covered by the media, maybe because those events have become a normal news item which do not deserve coverage by the media. But in each one of those events some or several of Iraqis were killed or wounded and maybe some American soldiers as well. But today two Turkish truck drivers were killed and three to five trucks were attacked which may lead to a crisis in bringing the goods or fuel from Turkey.

They come from Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Palestine, Iran & Libya

They should be publicly executed on Iraqi streets and hung from the trees, so next time Arab terrorists want to come into Iraq, they will see the bodies of their “pajamas brothers” and think twice about blowing up, ambushing and massacring innocent Iraqis.

one point of view is becoming part of history.

I started shooting .pictures and I was full of joy; having such a conversation with no fear was impossible in the past and I just can’t help feel the joy every time I see it till now! Everyday I see a similar situation in a house or a university. Everyone feels responsible for Iraq’s future and everyone is looking forward for active contribution.

a 'doctor', 'engineer' or even an 'American'

There's one thing I had noticed from that Trailor though. Before the war on Iraq and Saddam being removed. When someone asks an Iraqi, 'what do you want to be when you grow up?'..Their immediate answer would be 'selling cars'.. or anything that somehow relates to the markets or trade. The only reason for that was because of the money they could get out of it, it barely was because of interest. Now when you ask an Iraqi what he or she wants to be, you would get an answer with a 'doctor', 'engineer' or even an 'American'. Things have changed a lot, in a good and bad way

why are we asking for others to watch our borders while we are sitting doing nothing?

A letter from an Irish Citizen

Dear Sir Madam I want you to publish in you news paper. To the captors holding Margarett Hassan release her at once. By holding her you are declaring war on Ireland. She is not a British Citizen she is a Irish Citizen. Ireland have not been involved in your war and we have no troops in Iraq. If you do not release her and harm her, I for one along with this country will be asking the Irish Govermnent to send troops to Iraq to support the UK and the USA to hunt you down and bring you to justice. You have nothing to gain by holding her. So release our Irish Citizen if you do not there will be hell to pay and you will pay it. Margarett every one in Ireland is thinking about you and our prayers are with you.

Hurrah

In Florida, a sampling of eight counties showed a consistent pattern of Democrats turning out to cast early ballots in greater proportion than their share of registered voters, while Republicans were going to the early voting sites at or below what their registration percentages would suggest.

In Seminole County, for example, Democrats make up 31.7 percent of the registered voters but 40 percent of the early voters. The same was true in Republican-leaning Brevard County, where Fred Galey, supervisor of elections, said that he had no specific figures but that "many more Democrats" are casting ballots than Republicans.

In Osceola County, a Democratic bastion, Democrats are turning out for early voting in higher percentages than their share of registered voters, while Republicans are below their registration levels. The same was true in Hillsborough, the highly populated county where Tampa is located
That sounds like what I'm hearing on the streets

He also denied the news that spread about Sistani preparing or supporting a particular list of candidates.

You may wonder: why the above preamble? And what bearing does it have on the present situation? Well, I shall answer you very briefly and concisely.
Any concept that there is possibility of a wide alliance that will support U.S. efforts and be amicable to its goals and national interests is a false hope which profoundly misinterprets the logic of historical realism. The battle lines are clearly drawn, and ally, foe, and opportunistic bystander are all quite well defined, and any notion that these can be appreciably changed by diplomacy or

black face of Islam...At the end of this day I become sad bcz my best friend (Qais) who is a Christian came to me & told me that his family is thinking seriously to leave Iraq for good & his aunt who lives in Mosul in the North of Iraq is in getting troubles with those terrorists & also in work so she decided to leave Iraq also, I tried to cool him about the situation & how it is getting better but I can understand him bcz if I were him, I would think with the same thing.

The family eventually travelled to Iraq via Syria.

Suzan Ibrahim, 31, a lawyer, and her husband Honar, 38, a graphic designer, arrived at Istanbul with their one-year-old son and three-year-old daughter. The parents were born in Sulaimaniya in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq. They were planning to travel through Turkey to visit friends and family still living there.

We hold valid British passports," Mrs Ibrahim said. "When we arrived at the airport the immigration officials saw that [we] had written Kurdistan as our place of birth in our passports. We wanted to recognise that we are from Kurdistan, and the British government obviously didn't have any problem with that
But the Turkish officials put us all in a room where the lights were left on all night. The children couldn't sleep. The officials humiliated us, saying racist things about Kurds. We lost our tickets as well, and the airline refused to give us a refund."

“EXIT”

This may sound silly but It’s really something nice to be able to move freely, leave your country whenever you want and come back whenever you like and I can’t describe to you what I felt when I saw the word “EXIT” printed on one of the passport’s pages; I was sad for what we missed and at the same time optimistic and happy for what’s waiting for us in the future. Life seemed normal for me for the 1st time in my life. Soon after the war we could sense freedom immediately but this time we experienced it in a way that we haven’t before. It was an amazing feeling!
Despite all what’s Baghdad is going through, nothing can match the peace I felt when I walked down from the airplane in Baghdad's airport.

Mission Statement

My name is Madtom.
There are a lot of blogs out there and I want to make this one a little different. I will post what I see out there or link to news or other blogs that bring us news from the front lines.

The thing that I want to do different with this blog, is that I want to post stories from the point of view of all the different characters that make up this war. I want to post stories from G.I.Joe, and from his enemy Haji, or from the point of view of their families. The idea is for anyone, be they friend or foe that has something to say, a story to tell, about this, or any war, can send it to me and I will post it here, anonymously.

I am doing this so that the public at large can get an idea of what is going on in this war, and for those doing the fighting can have their stories told. I want to try to do it from all sides.
The good, the bad, and the ugly.

So if you have a story that you think needs to be told, and you want a forum to tell your story then e-mail them to Madtom
Also read the Cast of Characters

The terrorists and the media support them will intensify their operations in the next few days. They may plan to abduct a VIP person or even many. There operations may involve big attacks especially in Iraq. Probably many cells have been motivated including infiltrates in the police and other systems. The beheading of more than 9 Iraqi Police by Tawhed and Jihad Zarqawi group in the beginning of Ramadan is a good indication for that.

Update: 6/11/05
I have to ask, why are you reading this post? I ask because believe it or not this old post is very popular, it pops up over and over. So please leave me a note and tell me how or why you were directed here. Thank you

Original:
I went down to the library today to Vote in the General Election, and the place was swamped with people, I took a number, there was about 100 people in front of me, so I waited for like an hour, and like 10-20 people went through the line. I don't think the library realized what a response they would get, and only had like 10 voting machines setup and three people at the desk. The staff was OK and had everything organized, they were getting people through the desk line fast.
But the wait for the machine was long. It's a big long ballot here in the state of Florida, 5 of the machines were setup for that precinct only, they were empty and the last five were for the rest of us. And that library is the only early voting place in my city, I think I heard that they had 20 places throughout the county.
I left without voting, And plan to try again tomorrow at a different time.
I wonder if the traffic was like that all day or what?
I went at 5 after work with 2 hours till closing, I thought I had plenty of time to vote, but so did every one else.. I hope it's a trend.
I talked to a few people in the line and they said that this year was the first time they had voted, if they are anything like my brother, that never votes, but registered this year just to vote against Bush, he's going to be fighting an up hill battle all the way.
I hope that tomorrow they set up more machines, 5 is definitely not enough.

Elections

Now, do we have a right, as Iraqis to express our opinion about the U.S. elections, which are of course an entirely internal affair for the American people? Or are they?
It seems to me, that since this matter is going to have a direct impact on our lives and very existence and since the U.S. government and people have seen fit to intervene and initiate this profound revolution in our country; it would not be extravagant nor incorrect for us even to demand to take part in those elections, rhetorically speaking of course.

Pictures
Background

Character: Iraqi Doctor

    Involuntary Organ Donor

In Iraq, 1975, I worked as an Eye Registrar at the Medical Teaching Hospital. This hospital was the only hospital that had referrals which included complicated and unusual cases.

One of my patients I had treated, Mr. Rahman, a 60 year old Iraqi man, had a corneal disease in his left eye. He had consistent pain, loss of sight, and was not improved by any sort of medicine that we had given him. I found out that PK or a Corneal Transplant was the only way to regain Mr Rahman’s vision and stop the pain.

Corneas weren’t available in Iraq to do this procedure because donations of any organ weren’t common nor accepted due to religious and personal reasons.
Mr. Rahman was required to wait until he had the opportunity to be given a corneal transplant by a donor, which might take many years.

At the time of the 1970s, there was a murderer in Iraq who killed people in their houses or anywhere, with a sharp blade. The people called him “Abu Tobar” (The man with the big blade). With so many deaths happening around, after 6 months or so, the murderer was captured and soon got executed for the cause he had made. I do want to remind you that in Iraq, the Jail Authority have the control to do anything with the prisoners that had been executed (such as donating their organ).

Till then, we had no cornea to be donated by anyone. The hospital received a call from the Jail Authority regarding about a suggestion to donating the murderer’s cornea, this was the only chance to help Mr. Rahman. He had signed the usual concent of the operation that I was going to do, but I did not clarify Mr. Rahman about who’s the donor. So, without his notice of who’s the donor’s identity, I implanted the cornea. The operation was successful.

Several weeks later, Mr. Rahman came to the hospital for a follow up examination, he asked me with deep concern about the “donor’s identity”. I was speechless, in some way, guilty of what I had done and wasn’t able to tell him the truth, because no one would like this situation to happen to him/herself. Unfortunately, Mr Rahman had been told by one of the paramedics working at the hospital that the cornea implanted in his eyes was taken from the murderer by the Jail Authority.

Dangers of Ignorance

The sanctions regime that existed between 1991 and 2003 promoted Iraqi religious revival. The destruction of the Iraqi middle class, the collapse of the secular educational system, and the growth of illiteracy, despair, and anomie have resulted in large numbers of Iraqis seeking succor in religion.

Black Sheep Down

Every family must suffer from a bad family member. My parents' neighbors in Baghdad were not an exception. The neighbors had a son named "Saddam" -- I wonder if the name itself was a curse. Saddam was a bad guy in his neighborhood. He had a popular hobby during the last years of Saddam Hussein's era. It was called "stealing water pumps." He stole more than seven water pumps, including my parents pump, before he was arrested by the cops a few years ago.

Training, training and more training

We got commended for having such accurate fire at that distance by the First Sergeant, which he said was really really good shit at that range. Out of 2 companies, our Platoon, 2nd Platoon, out of 8 other Platoons did the absolute best. One of the OC's, which are guys that observe the whole assault and then give a AAR (after action review) and tell us everything we did wrong and right said we were the best he'd ever seen, we were extremely fast and it was extremely well done. After that, we did a 12 mile road march will all our equipment. It's not easy to carry a machine gun on a long road march like that, but I was able to do pretty well and had to encourage other guys to keep going and not to stop. We all completed it without a single fall out. After that we did a mass formation of both companies and a Lt Colonel, told us how damn impressed he was with everyone and that he has absolutely no doubt that when we get deployed to Iraq soon, again, that there will be nothing we can't handle. He also said how extremely proud he was of each and everyone of us. Our platoon was the only platoon that did a night assault on the objective, we only got 1 1 /2 hours of sleep before we had to step and conduct the road march. So, we were all pretty tired, but we all still made it. When we got back to the Company area, they commended us on that too. 2nd Platoon has always been known as the best Platoon in the whole company. We are starting to get ALOT of cherries (new guys, FNGs)

City is now firmly in hand, so it is time to make ourselves the authority. We start seeing to the local populace, by monitoring traffic, and stimulating the local economy by buying lots of snacks and sodas. Sadly, this also means that we have to help, even when we can't. While in this new pb, a local girl in a neighboring house somehow fell into her families septic tank. It was filled with methane gas, shortly after passing out she died of asphyxiation. Another family member, an uncle or something, tried to get her out. Passed out in the process and also died. This is when the family waved down an ING from our little slice of heaven. He went over to see what they wanted without telling anyone where he was going. He too went in the hole, passed out and died. This was the point they flipped out. They gathered and started crying and screaming. This alarmed us, we thought it was a riot and went to investigate.

It's a frog.

Something about a frog?

"protect the troops"

Blog idea

I was looking into who?? I'm going to vote for in the Florida Senate race, and I came across Betty's page
Betty Castor for U.S. Senate

and noticed that she had a blog. It reminded me of another blog idea I had before this one.

That would be, that every office of an Elected official should have an Official blog. Where they post the officials daily schedules, speeches, appearances, and votes. Just the kind of thing that blogs where made for.

But I would also like to have a section for the official's constituents. These people would have a password (on their voters registration card) that would allow them to create A constituents account, that could be as anonymous or real as you like. This account would identify you as a constituent and give you access to the comments section, or at a minimum highlight your comments as coming from a constituent, in some way, could be a different color.

This would give the public direct access to their representative, live on the Internet, 24/7. Putting all the relevant issues at your fingertips.
If there is some vote coming up on some issue that you are interested, you could simply look at the upcoming vote page read your representatives position, or lack there of, and post your views on the matter or debate the issue with the other participants.

The blog would also offer the elected official a quick look at the opinions of the registered public on any issue complete with profiles of the people that participate.
This is long enough, if you got any question, or if this already exist somewhere let me know.
