Talabani Reassures Turkey on PKK

Iraqi President Jalal Talabani has reassured the Turkish government that Iraq will do its utmost to prevent terrorist attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) through northern Iraq.
In a press conference on Wednesday in Baghdad, Talabani said he assured Turkey that the Iraqi government was determined to put an end to attacks by armed groups aimed at neighboring countries, adding that he was "dealing with the issue personally."

"Iraq will 'do its best' to prevent the PKK from organizing attacks on Turkey from the Iraqi territories," Talabani remarked.

He also stated that he ordered the closure of the PKK offices in Iraq.

Talabani went on to say that a meeting on the issue will be held with the participation of Iraqi, US and Kurdish officials; however, he did not make clear when such a meeting would take place.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday before his departure for the OIC meeting that the Iraqi government had started to take steps toward the prevention of PKK attacks
