Report: The U.S. Stops a Coup

"According to Mithal Al Alousi, a member of Iraq's parliament, Americans foiled a "terrorist" coup plot against the government of Nouri Al Maliki about a month ago. Al Alousi told the London-based newspaper, Asharq Al Awsat that, “…the American forces uncovered the plot and notified the Iraqi government." He added that the Americans "arrested those involved in the plot.”

"No Iraqi politicians or political parties or members of parliament were involved in the coup plot,” he said. The coup plotters recently apprehended by the Americans might have been Baathist Iraqis, he speculated.

Al Alousi, an independent secular parliamentarian, also told the newspaper that there was no truth to recent reports of an internal coup attempt involving members of the Iraqi parliament. Some media reports had indicated that there was an impending coup attempt against Iraq's government."
