24 Part II

"Team Badger is heading south. We have been on mission for 16 hours plus and we still have a ways to go. It’s after midnight and we are driving down a road that is heavily traveled during the day and we would be surprised to find anything along this route, although it is certainly not out of the realm of possibility. We keep a watchful eye as we move along.

Our destination is the big Marine Corps Airbase to our south. Here is where most of the major shipments, be they personnel or equipment, come into western Iraq. When we first arrived last year, this base is where we flew into. We have come here to fuel our vehicles, try to grab a little sleep in a secure area, and get something to eat before we head back out.

This place was once an Iraqi Air Force base. When we were here last year we did not stay long enough to explore the base, but now I see illuminated against the skyline, the shapes of what appear to be Su-27 fighter planes, products of the now defunct Soviet Union supplier of Saddam Hussein’s armory. I hope to get a better view in the daylight."
