Civil war edges closer

"BAGHDAD -- Iraq was slipping into all-out civil war, a Shiite leader declared after the weekend's devastating cluster of suicide bombers murdered more than 150 people, most of them Shiite.

On the streets of Baghdad, which are seething with fear and anger, there are growing rumours of impending conflict.

Iraq's security forces have been overwhelmed by the scale of the suicide bombings.

"What is truly happening, and what shall happen, is clear: a war against the Shias," Sheikh Jalal al-Din al-Saghir, a prominent Shiite cleric and MP, told the Iraqi parliament."
