Pal of British soldier killed in Afghanistan reveals fury over Islamic group's march through Wootton Bassett
A friend of a British soldier killed in Afghanistan spoke of his fury yesterday at plans by a extremist Islamic group to march through Wootton Bassett.
Steven Stratford was in the Wiltshire town for the repatriation of pal Rifleman Aidan Howell, 19.
Steven, from Leeds, said: "If these Muslims come to protest here it will be carnage. If they want to protest they shouldn't do it here. Imagine Aidan's mother and father seeing that - it's the lowest of the low. Aidan was an excellent boy. You could not meet a nicer gentleman."
Wootton Bassett came to a customary halt yesterday as the body of Aidan, from Rothwell, Northants, and Sapper David Watson, 23, of Whickham, Gateshead, passed slowly through the town centre.
A Leeds United flag was placed on top of the hearse carrying Rfn Howell, who was a fan of the club.
Islamic preacher Anjem Choudary has threatened to stage a march in opposition to the war.
And Zakeel Abbas, from Choudary's Islam4UK group, boasted that Wootton Bassett is a "brilliant" location for a demo because it is "close to the hearts" of dead British soldiers' families.
Abbas also claimed he has recruited more than 2,000 supporters to join the parade.
But more than 350,000 people have signed up to a Facebook petition calling for the march to be banned by police.
