Turkish strikes on Iraq killed 10 PKK rebels: agency

ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Turkish air strikes against suspected Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) bases in northern Iraq last week killed 10 suspected militants, the state-run Anatolian news agency said Wednesday.

The strikes in Iraq's Zap and Avasin-Basyan regions also destroyed a number of PKK weapon stores and camps, Anatolian reported, without saying how it obtained the information.

The air strikes occurred on April 29 after nine Turkish soldiers were killed in a bomb explosion in southeastern Turkey, the deadliest attack since October.

The PKK is largely based in semi-autonomous northern Iraq. The group has waged a 25-year war against the Turkish state, and 40,000 people, mainly Kurds, have died in the fighting.

Separately, Iranian shelling Monday of suspected sites belonging to the Party of Free Life of Kurdistan (PJAK), the PKK's Iranian offshoot, caused "important losses," Anatolian said, without elaborating.

Iraq's Foreign Ministry Tuesday condemned the Iranian attack on its territory and warned of "negative consequences" if the strikes continued.

In recent years, NATO ally Turkey and Iran have shared intelligence and co-ordinated attacks on Kurdish rebels.

Anatolian also quoted Turkish military officials as saying Syrian authorities had arrested 200 PKK members and their supporters who were demonstrating in support of the rebel group.
