Craigslist Told to Remove Illegal Content in Ten Days or Face Possible Prosecution
Anderson, S.C. - May 5, 2009 Attorney General Henry McMaster today called on the CEO of the Internet classified site “craigslist” to remove “the portions of the Internet site dedicated to South Carolina and its municipal regions which contain categories for and functions allowing for the solicitation of prostitution and the dissemination and posting of graphic pornographic material” within ten (10) days.
“If those South Carolina portions of the site are not removed,“ McMaster said, “the management of craigslist may be subject to criminal investigation and prosecution.“

A number of area law enforcement officials, including Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper, Pickens County Sheriff David Stone, and Oconee County Sheriff James Singleton, joined McMaster today at the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office to make the announcement.
In November 2008, craigslist entered into an agreement with forty (40) state Attorneys General and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (“NCMEC”) to put in place safeguards to combat unlawful activity and improve public safety on the craigslist Internet classified service.
Recent national events, along with ongoing law enforcement efforts in South Carolina clearly indicate that craigslist has not put in place sufficient safeguards in the last six (6) months to prohibit the Internet site from being used as a vehicle to advertise or solicit prostitution and to post graphic pornographic pictures accessible to minors.

News 2 has learned that South Carolina Attorney General Henry McMaster is preparing to announce that the CEO of Craigslist has 10 days to either remove illegal content from the SC portions of the site, or face prosecution. McMaster will hold a news conference in Anderson to make the announcement in about an hour. Read more from the Attorney General’s official press release below…

Attorney General Henry McMaster will travel to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, where he will make a major announcement concerning the Internet classified website called craigslist.com.
The press conference will begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, 305 Camson Road, Anderson, S.C. 29625.
A number of area law enforcement officials, including Anderson County Sheriff John Skipper, Pickens County Sheriff David Stone, and Oconee County Sheriff James Singleton, will join McMaster at the press conference.

Freedom of speech doesn't include aiding and abetting a crime. I never understood how it could be a crime, but that's just the Libertarian in me. Dating sites are legal, and if you get a date, the woman is going to expect an exchange of goods for services. I think it's the restaurant, movie and jewelry lobby keeping themselves in the middle of transaction.
How is it different from the people that pay and provide for street corners. How is Craigslist more aiding and abetting than the Mayor?
Well. if the mayor builds the street corner and marks the maps and puts up signs inviting potential whore lovers to find their 'erotic services here', then maybe you have a point.
How about the street light...and the mail box.
