Kurds protest in disputed Iraq city
BAGHDAD (AP): Hundreds of Iraqi Kurds stormed an election office in a disputed city after claiming many of them were not on voting lists for provincial elections.
The protest in Khanaqin on Saturday is part of lingering disputes over control of the city about 87 miles (140 kilometers) northeast of Baghdad. In August, Kurdish and Iraqi forces were locked in a tense standoff there before the Kurds backed off.
A Kurdish official in Khanaqin, Salahuddin Kekhaa, said Kurds held a rally portesting that thousands had been left off the voting list and then tried to break into the local election office, before being repelled.
There were no reports of serious injuries.
Iraqis across the country on Saturday were voting in elections for provincial councils.
