Flying into Kuwait, Part 3 - (Neon) Lights, Camel, SpectACTIONular!!!
" Despite the preconceived ideas implanted in the minds of many soldiers by movies and the media, the aerial view of Kuwait City proved to be completely different from what was expected. Outside my window was a landscape full of tall buildings, city lights, neon signs and all of the other visuals one would commonly associate with a large city. My roommate commented that the spectacle was very similar to the nighttime skyline of Anaheim or Los Angeles.
The rest of the passengers aboard the 747 made similar observations. As we made our descent to the air strip, each soldier picked out businesses and landmarks in an eye spy type of game. “Yo, they have a McDonald’s,” one cried out, “I think I see a Yoo-hoo factory,” another declared - meanwhile the rest of the passengers tried to verify the claims. Still others scanned the Kuwaiti landscape in search of Wal-Mart, Burger King, and yes, even a John Deere factory. The most baffling part of the entire display was that most of the signs were written in English versus Arabic."
