UB admissions team invited to Iraq

The letter to Barbara Maryak came in from Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. We want you to come to Iraq and be part of Iraq’s major higher education initiative, Maliki wrote. He said his government plans to place 10,000 students a year in international universities to build up a solid core of educated Iraqis to strengthen the nation’s economy and independence.

The University of Bridgeport is one of about 20 universities and colleges in the United States invited to participate in a week full of presentations and recruitment programs in Baghdad and in the Kurd city of Sulaymaniyah in northern Iraq.

Maryak, associate vice president for admissions, and Steven Boyd, director of international admissions, left for Iraq on Jan. 16. They will be there for a week, and participate in programs held in the International Zone (Green Zone) of the capital city. They expect to be talking with hundreds of prospective students. Universities from the United Kingdom and Canada have also been asked to participate.

The university has long been as attraction to international students. The Schools of Engineering and Business are held in high regard, as is the university’s location near New York and the corporate headquarters located in Fairfield and Westchester counties. All of that accounts for an international enrollment of some 25 to 35 percent of the UB student population.

After that the UB team will move on to Jordan, where the university has agreements and working relationships with Al Hussein Bin Talal University (named for the late King Hussein) in Ma’an and Princess Sumaya University for Technology in Jubaiha. The pair will meet with students at both universities, as well as other colleges and high schools in the country.

It’s been a busy year for international admissions. In the fall, Maryak, Boyd and Professor Abdelshakour Abuzneid, director of systems operations in the UB School of Engineering and the founder of the Muslim Student Association in 1997, made a three-week tour of colleges and high schools in all the Persian Gulf states.

The university in recent years, in an initiative directed by Assistant Provost Daniel Han, has developed a significant number of partnerships with international institutions of higher education. They cover student admissions and transfers, faculty exchanges, development of joint programs and conferences among other academic relationships.

UB’s international partners include universities and colleges in China, England, Egypt, Germany, India, Jordan, Korea, Lebanon, Moldova, Singapore, Taiwan and Uganda.
