Two medical doctors, the Alai brothers, immune deficiency experts, are in prison (if still alive) for divulging the extent of the AIDS/HIV epidemic - specially among the clerics, their religious novitiates (students) and some ayatollahs and senior regime figures.

Now the regime has to hide a raging Cholera epidemic which could put it on a special travel restriction list.

While some basic sewer piping and sewage treatment exists, Tehran and almost every town and city has sewage wells below each building, which are untreated and UNLINED. Constantly seeping, decade after decade, generation after generation, into the adjoining soil and into similarly dug water supplies or "ghanat" - underground rivers accessed by a chain of earthern surface wells."
