Storming towards the enemy...with their bayonets fixed and helmet-cameras rolling

These are the most dramatic images of British soldiers on the front line ever shot by the troops themselves.

They show paratroopers and Royal Marines fighting in Sangin province at the end of September in the most fierce exchanges of the controversial Afghanistan campaign.

WARNING: The footage shot by British soldiers in Afghanistan is graphic and the soundtrack includes strong language that is unsuitable for minors

It was also the biggest operation this year, involving 200 elite British forces against a larger Taliban force.

The pictures are stills from high-quality videos shot unofficially by troops who strapped mini-cameras to their helmets before storming towards enemy positions with bayonets fixed.

At one point in the amazing footage - which can be seen on our website www.mailonsunday.co.uk - the shout of "Man down!" can be heard as an officer is badly wounded.

As he lies bleeding, medics rush towards him and he is taken away from the battlefield on a quad bike.

The film also shows British soldiers storming a house. They burst through the doors screaming at each other to take up the correct positions.

A grenade is thrown into a cellar and, through the dust, a Taliban fighter is shot dead.

An Army source said: "The footage is unique because no TV crew would ever be permitted to accompany elite forces on such a dangerous mission."

I think every troop should have a camera on his helmet, and all the footage should be made available to the public.
