"OCEANSIDE Calif., - U.S. Army Staff Sgt. David L. Herrera, who was killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq, was following in the family tradition when he joined the military.
Even as Herrera's family mourned his loss, his father and brother were preparing to return to Iraq and continue the mission.
Herrera, 26, died Saturday from injuries suffered when a blast destroyed his Humvee on patrol in Baghdad.
"He was there for us," said his father, U.S. Army Reserve Master Sgt. Marcos Herrera, who fought in Vietnam and may deploy to Iraq in the spring. "He did it for his country, and he did it for the president. We are there for a reason. There is a mission, and we will complete it."
David Herrera's older brother, Army Staff Sgt. Marcus Herrera, also may be deployed to Iraq for a second time.
Despite her grief, David Herrera's mother, Madalena "Maddi" Herrera, was unwavering in her support for the war and the goal of bringing peace to Iraq - a mission that could take the lives of her husband and remaining son."
