Iraq to buy one mln tons of US wheat: deputy PM

"LONDON (Reuters) - Iraq will buy one million tons of U.S. wheat in the next few days under a policy that puts the government rather than the suppliers in charge of shipping the cargo, Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Chalabi said on Sunday.

The decision marks the first time that Australia lost a major deal in Iraq after dominating the market for years. U.S. and Australian suppliers shared a 1.2 million ton Iraqi tender that was awarded two months ago.

Chalabi, a key official in making procurement decisions, said the Iraqi government chose U.S. wheat after Australia failed to make offers under the new Free on Board (FOB) system."

Not that I care if Iraq buys American products, but why don't we sell them farming equipment, irrigation systems and fertilizers, and put Iraqis farmers to work to feed themselves.
