Briton held in Iraq on arms smuggling charges

"A British national and nine Iraqis have been arrested in Iraq after allegedly carrying weapons and surveillance equipment over the border from Saudi Arabia, it was revealed today.
Iraqi police told Reuters that the Briton was among a group arrested yesterday near the southern Shia holy city of Najaf after crossing the desert border. Authorities in Najaf said the suspects would appear in court some time today.

The Briton's identity was unclear and British officials were making further investigations.

Police in Najaf said they had contacted the British consulate in Basra regarding the arrested Briton's identity but were told that the consulate had no information, Reuters said."
