Pirate Constitutions Sold on Iraqi Streets

"BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - First pirate CDs. Then pirate videos. Now pirate constitutions.

Iraqi officials are still haggling over the wording of the draft constitution, which was supposed to have been finalized on Aug. 28 despite the objections of minority Sunni Arabs.

The late fine-tuning has delayed printing the 5 million copies that the government plans to distribute to all Iraqi families before the Oct. 15 referendum.

But Iraqi street vendors, who peddle magazines and newspapers for motorists stuck in traffic, have added copies of the constitution to their offerings.

Each copy goes for 100 Iraqi dinars, about 70 cents.

One vendor, waving copies of the document on a Baghdad street, refused to identify his supplier.

But copies of the version announced Aug. 22 and another supposedly declared final six days later were published in Baghdad newspapers."

I think this is the only good news I have seen. If there's a market, there must be some interest among the public for this information. Now all we need to find out is, What that is?

Hey Madtom,

Sorry for the slow response to your comments on my blog - I was busy with work this week, and it took me a long time to get the full constitution into that post (which I did a couple of days ago). I wasn't ignoring you - honest!

The thought never even crossed my mind, I thought we had a good debate and it's helped me organize my thoughts on the subject. I am thankful for the attention I got, at the time no one else would even talk to me about it and I thought that a lot of the bloggers were white washing the constitution. I still think many are. I may still disagree with you on many issues related to this draft, but I never thought you were ingoing me.
