"US officials were aware months ago that Fort Hood jihadist was trying to contact Al-Qaeda"

But apparently reining in this mass murderer before he murdered 13 people would have been "Islamophobic."
"Officials: U.S. Aware of Hasan Efforts to Contact al Qaeda," by Richard Esposito, Matthew Cole and Brian Ross for ABCNews, November 9 (thanks to all who sent this in):
U.S. intelligence agencies were aware months ago that Army Major Nidal Hasan was attempting to make contact with people associated with al Qaeda, two American officials briefed on classified material in the case told ABC News.
It is not known whether the intelligence agencies informed the Army that one of its officers was seeking to connect with suspected al Qaeda figures, the officials said. One senior lawmaker said the CIA had, so far, refused to brief the intelligence committees on what, if any, knowledge they had about Hasan's efforts.
CIA director Leon Panetta and the Director of National Intelligence, Dennis Blair, have been asked by Congress "to preserve" all documents and intelligence files that relate to Hasan, according to the lawmaker....
The Army Chief of Staff, General George Casey, raised concerns over the weekend that innocent Muslim soldiers could suffer as a result of the shooting at Fort Hood.
"I think the speculation (on Hasan's Islamic roots) could potentially heighten backlash against some of our Muslim soldiers," he said on ABC's "This Week."
General, you're a dhimmi tool.

Mad Tom, Will, et al.,
This was such a FUBAR.
Hopefully, some of the Republicans discover their backbones on this issue.
And General Casey there, babbling on about diversity.
Aye carumba.
It looks pretty much as most of us assumed it to be: the modern day trait of the West to assume all blame and the desire to appear tolerant to a point of self destruction is just a big invitation to our enemies.
I don't know what to do about it. It's hardly fair to assume the worst of all Muslims. It's more unfair to demand that our men and women serve alongside individuals that declare themselves to be sworn to an ideology that is literally the enemy if taken seriously by its followers.
It isn't that unlike Shintoism among resident Japanese in '42. Then, we assumed most all with Japanese ancestry suspect, then came to see those who were Shinto as the enemy. Would we have allowed an avowed Emperor worshiper to serve in the military after Pearl Harbor? Of course not. Some we imprisoned, many we deported. The vast majority of American Japanese disavowed the Emperor and Shinto forever. Maybe it's time to demand something similar of our Muslim residents.
'Either you are with us or against us' may be seen by the enlightened as simplistic and ignorant, but truth and common sense have been out of style for some time now.
Thank god we had that Patriot Act protecting us.
But since it seems not to have worked, maybe what we need is to give them more power, more money, and more manpower to keep us safe. I mean even soldiers inside a massive base were not safe. Homeland Security needs to be bigger, we need to make it easier for them to eavesdrop, easier for them to search inside your home. Shit the next killer might be lurking right next door, and by the time they know, it'll be too late...
Mad Tom et Will,
This is like immigration.
Just enforce the rules already present, engage in common sense and cut out the PC nonsense.
Patriot Act, yes, one has to watch out for government overreach and apply a time limit as to how long these programs may be in effect, and the effectiveness of such measures, because under the Federal Bureaucracy, the powers will be abused.
However, this was more of an example of PC in vogue in the US military preventing suspicions from being broached and action taken, rather than a flaw in the Patriot Act.
They passed all that crap, they got all the stove pipes worked out, and now you find out that this lunatic was writing emails to AQ, or whoever, and they were going to send him off to Afghanistan, probably to keep doing what he did, counsel sick soldiers.
Thank god he went off when he did god only knows what damage he could have done in country with bigger guns.
If this ass hole were a civilian Dr, he would have got his ass sued a long time ago. The VA is clearly defunct useless bureaucracy that could not heal itself much less anyone else.
If they would have just enforced the laws they had on the books on 9/10 there would have been no 9/11 and no need for that damn Patriot Act in the first place. But like the say in spanish, the government is like an under aged kid, not responsible for his own actions.
