Obama urges Iran to affirm peaceful nuclear energy

PRAGUE (AP) - President Barack Obama said the U.S. will proceed with development of a missile defense system in Europe as long as there is an Iranian threat of nuclear weapons.

He said that if that threat is removed, "The driving force for missile defense in Europe will be removed."

In his speech before cheering crowds in historic Prague, Obama said the U.S. will present Iran with "a clear choice" to cease its nuclear and ballistic missile activity or face increased isolation and a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.

"Let me be clear: Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile activity poses a real threat, not just to the United States, but to Iran's neighbors and our allies," the president said. "As long as the threat from Iran persists, we intend to go forward with a missile defense system that is cost-effective and proven."

And what has happened in the last 48 hours? N Korea will suffer NO consequences for testing what is effectively an ICBM despite what the O one declared would happen, and O announces the effective end of anti missile defense programs the following day! Unfuckingbelievable! Not even James Earl Carter was that recklessly stupid--- or diabolically smart depending on the intent. Third world status can't be far behind, but at least we won't be arrogant and dismissive of other countries anymore.

I have no idea, I'm just hanging on for the ride...I'll tell you one thing, I don't think anyone, friend or foe, has any idea either.

I think people are just cheering, because they don't know what else to do...No doubt the crazies are out in full force.

You know I am listening to Gate's now. I missed most of it and hope to catch the next showing. I don't hear "end of anti missile", I hear something else. I heard him say they would max out the production of the sm, or mm or whatever. That is the one that can be fired from multiple platforms, including ships..lots of those = a lot of Missile defense, and a reliable system at that.

Complex Hybrid Warfare., where's Captain America when you need him.

You heard the spin. More antimissiles on Aegis (4 I think). Planned future ground based installations scrapped. boost phase defense system scrapped. A system designed to be 80% effective will be about 25% effective and completely useless against missiles fired over much of the world. At a time when all of our potential enemies are rapidly expanding their missile tech, we are giving up our ability to defend. And we did that in exchange for ..... what? It wasn't for security. How about more money for welfare, which we will need because these companies building these things are about the only big manufacturing base left in the country. And it isn't that, because they have shown no reluctance to just print more money. The fact is, we are being led by people who believe it is wrong for us to be able to dominate militarily and think a nuclear weapon free world is possible.

They are showing themselves to be what they are, transnationalists who think international law and governance is the future. Our constitution is an historical relic to them. Look to the appointment of legal counsel at the State Dept.

They have actually taken over the financial sector with outright extortion. threatened banks that would not take that damn TARP money with 5 year audits, and now have declared the ability to hire, fire, determine wages, etc of all those banks--- and are now REFUSING to take the money back! A quote from Obama to those banks -- My administration is the only thing between you and the pitchforks!-- So, they spread fear of impending collapse and use ACORN and the SEIU to protest and threaten AIG people, then demand cooperation from others for protection from groups they largely control? It's hard to imagine how far down the road they have taken us in a few months.

Gates has my respect, at least in the short term. I would like to hear your version where Gates is sitting there spinning the defense of the nation...

"Boost phase" that involves lasers the size of 747's I don't think we can really deploy that yet..Bush spun lots of little tales. Just not everyone believed it.

Sec. Rumsfeld doubled the budgets and was happily on his way to lose two wars.

I would like you to show me one credible defense expert who thinks the nation will be safer because we canceled layers of missile defense. One missile set to detonate an EMP could destroy the nation and kill 10's of millions. NK, Iran, Pakistan and any another 3rd world shithole could ,with a ICBM and a single nuclear bomb hold us hostage. And with a President like O, they wouldn't fear retribution. I think it's worth whatever it costs, and it doesn't cost that much. It will cost a fraction of cap and trade bullshit which is for an increasingly obvious scare scam called global warming. The airborne laser isn't deployed, but one has been tested and worked and declared deployable in wartime, I believe. Gates saying we have it covered with a few more ship borne anti missile missiles is spinning. Isn't it amazing that w have TROPLED the national debt, but we are cutting defense in a time when we are becoming most vulnerable?

Will, as far as I know, And I could always be wrong, they are canceling projects that we tried but do not work yet, and going forward with "production" of the systems that do work and are deployable. That is real missile defense, and a version that can be placed with all our allies. We can have ship, land and truck and rail based platforms. Ready to go today ready to protect our interest. No one said that they would stop working on other layers, only that they would go to production with the first layer...The Russians understand the threat, not sure why you don't.

Some things can be right even if Obama thinks so..

All I know, MT, is that I have read at least a dozen reviews of the policy by people expert in the field, and they all say we are making a grave mistake. Find one who agrees with you and I'll listen. The system was designed to have three layers, one is deployable now. The airborne laser is in final testing and has passed every test, though the final test has not yet been completed. No reason to think it won't work. And yes, the did say they were stopping development. Not funding means not developing.

You add to that the cuts in fighters and the clear intention to become just another 'power' and another pawn in the global government, and you see O is exactly the man many of us thought he was. Start practicing your bowing.

I have been waiting for you to point out that O has not only not ended wiretapping without warrants, he has EXPANDED it, declaring the government is immune from privacy laws as long as it doesn't use the info gathered. You had a lot of outrage before, where is it now? Turley has written on the subject lately. Check it out.

I don't even know who Turly is??

And if you have dozens of reviews, I wish you would share because I have not read one yet, But you know 186 F22's is the most powerful airforce in the world...

But that was my complaint, If they wire tap, and then throw out anything that is not "terrorism" I would not have complained so loudly before to begin with..Though I still would not like it, per say. But putting back up the wall makes it better, as long as they still share when it does come to terrorist. I know, how do you know?...I don't know.

Oh and the airborn laser did not pass one test, it cant be put in storage until the time you need the thing, you would have to fly them 24/7 with the laser pumped to be ready to shoot...No where near ready for deployment. And you might as well fund laser physics research to make the kind of breakthroughs necessary.
`
But please enlighten me, I am always open to learning new things.

"That's a tall order by any standards, and many sceptics have questioned whether the weapon will ever get off the ground at all. But over the last few years, various aspects of the ABL's operation have been proven to work. For instance, both the twin low-power target-tracking lasers and the main laser beam's control optics have been successfully tested, while the Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL) weapon has produced a beam in the lab. But until the test on 24 November at Edwards Air Force Base in California, the laser had not been fired from inside a Boeing 747.
That was a challenge because the COIL's six chemical modules - which rely on the reaction between oxygen molecules in an excited state and iodine to produce a light-emitting gas - are each the size of a large sports utility vehicle and collectively take up the rear half of the plane. The beam-forming and fire control system takes up the front half. This system ensures that the laser beam is accurately aligned so it does not damage or destroy the plane, and that it shoots where the target-tracker tells it to."

Doesn't sound ready for deployment to me, unless of course they give us a weeks notice before launching.

And if it were ready, I would put them in orbit, and forget the plane.

I didn't say it was ready. I said it had been successfully tested. the laser works. the tracking works in flight as intended. Only thing it has not done is track a missile in flight and fire on it. So far, all the goals are met and the potential is incredible. It should scare the shit out of any opponent. I believe that is why it's being canceled. It doesn't fit into the O agenda where we must not be exceptional. we will be assimilated. They are doing things to bring that about in every Dept under his control. Putting it in space would be against several treaties, make it hard to service, make it more vulnerable. Everyone would know where it was at all times. My favorite potential space weapon is the Rod of Thor. Would render underground bunkers obsolete (Iran). Very simple weapon, once you get them in orbit. Rods of high strenth tungsten alloys dropped on target, capable of penetrating 100+ feet of reinforced concrete, no explosives required. Then again, I would find a way to guide asteroids on target and not tell anybody. Wow, what are the odds that an 100 ft asteroid would land in the middle of an Iranian nuclear facility? blame it on Allah.
