Air Force Entertainment

"After doing something the same way over and over you get in a routine where you start going through the motions on autopilot. Night QRF is no exception; preflight the aircraft, sign out radios, go to the "go/no go brief" with the Battle Captain, break your plastic fork in an over-cooked steak, play Guitar Hero for a while, then run up your aircraft to make sure its ready for the call that never comes.

So without any real conscious effort or thought, I found myself sitting in the cockpit getting ready to start the engines. A C-17 cargo plane was on final approach, so I watched it, daydreaming about flying the big iron. Jumbo aircraft look unnatural as they fly, their size makes them seem like they are going slower than they are. This one was no exception as it lazily crossed the runway threshold and alighted on its main landing gear right in the touchdown zone. It slowly rotated forward onto its nose landing gear...then kept rotating. It was on this day that the nose gear lost its battle with mass and inertia."
