US Forces Hit in Baghdad, Possible “Revenge” for Gaza
"Last week Moqtada Al-Sadr issued a statement calling for attacks on Americans as revenge for Israel’s offensive in Gaza. The statement was covered widely in the Iraqi and the international press and was read aloud in Sadrist mosques, and around 2,000 Sadr City residents turned out for a peaceful protest. This Thursday and early Friday, after a long period where US troops were targeted only occasionally, three attacks were launched against US forces, at least two from areas of Baghdad were Sadrist influence has historically been strong.
First a roadside bomb targeting a US convoy exploded, killing one Iraqi guard in front of the Ministry of Industry. On Thursday night 2 rockets hit the Green Zone, wounding one person. Iraqi and US forces were able to pinpoint the launch site in south eastern Baghdad and destroy two other rockets before they were launched. On Friday morning a roadside bomb hit a US convoy in the New Baghdad area of eastern Baghdad. One US soldier was wounded, who died in the hospital a few hours later."
