"“In Africa, everything is possible … and nothing is easy.”
That’s a phrase I’ve heard a dozen times during my month in Chad. It’s so true, especially in this barren, corrupt country. Since arriving here in mid June I’ve been carjacked, kidnapped, shot at and otherwise inconvenienced on countless occasions. I’ve paid hundreds of dollars in bribes – more than in Afghanistan and Somalia combined. Simple movements across Chad have required multiple authorizations from overlapping agencies, each stamped by every minor functionary en route.
But through it all, I’ve survived. And today Africa paid me back for a month of nonstop hassle."
