Turkish warplanes raid PKK rebel targets in Iraq
Turkey's military says it has mounted a cross-border air attack on Kurdish separatist positions in Iraq. Army sources are describing it as the biggest Turkish air operation in northern Iraq this year. PKK rebel bases are the targets of the raids which, according to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, have caused no casualties.
A series of air attacks has been carried out by Turkish armed forces since the end of a land offensive into Iraq in February. The rebels use the neighbouring country as a base from which to conduct attacks in Turkey.
The Turkish army tends to step up operations against the PKK in the spring when the snow melts, making it easier to move about in the mountainous region. The latest raids come as Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan visits Syria. He has said he will mediate in Middle East peace talks
