Iraq's radical cleric Muqtada al-Sadr blasts Bush's Mideast tour

NAJAF, Iraq - Radical Shiite leader Muqtada al-Sadr blasted U.S. President George Bush's Middle East tour today, saying the region would be better off if the American leader stayed away.

Al-Sadr, whose supporters have 30 of parliament's 275 seats, says the visit was aimed at realizing America's domination of the Arab world.

Al-Sadr has taken an uncompromisingly anti-American stand since he and his political movement burst on the scene soon after the U.S. invasion of Iraq toppled Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003.

His Mahdi Army militia has fought U.S. forces in Iraq for much of 2004 in Baghdad and across central and southern Iraq.

However, al-Sadr ordered his militia to stand down for six months in August, a move that U.S. commanders have publicly applauded because of its significant contribution toward the reduction in violence .

Al-Sadr says in his statement, issued in the holy Shiite city of Najaf south of Baghdad, that since America began to be involved in the Middle East, the suffering of Muslim and non-Muslim nations has gone from bad to worse.

Bush arrived in Israel Wednesday at the start of his Mideast tour, which will later take him to Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt.
