Marijuana may help stave off Alzheimer’s
WASHINGTON - Good news for aging hippies: smoking pot may stave off Alzheimer’s disease.
New research shows that the active ingredient in marijuana may prevent the progression of the disease by preserving levels of an important neurotransmitter that allows the brain to function.
Researchers at the Scripps Research Institute in California found that marijuana’s active ingredient, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, can prevent the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from breaking down more effectively than commercially marketed drugs.
THC is also more effective at blocking clumps of protein that can inhibit memory and cognition in Alzheimer’s patients, the researchers reported in the journal Molecular Pharmaceutics.
The researchers said their discovery could lead to more effective drug treatment for Alzheimer’s, the leading cause of dementia among the elderly.
Those afflicted with Alzheimer’s suffer from memory loss, impaired decision-making, and diminished language and movement skills. The ultimate cause of the disease is unknown, though it is believed to be hereditary.
Marijuana is used to relieve glaucoma and can help reduce side effects from cancer and AIDS treatment.

In other news, the justice department is seeking to subpoena drug researchers to find out, "which patients in this study used pot, and who knew about the pot smoking" Justice official were moving quickly to recover any evidence and put all those that broke the law behind bars.

Your grandfather dying of a brain tumor is a "great memory"? You must have had a wonderful relationship. Morbid.
Sorry man, but that's just how your comment came across.
You know you would be amazed at just how many people, normal well adjusted type people are walking around everyday "on dope" as you said. But it's not the kind you get in a parking lot of your local Denny's, it's the kind you get at a pharmacy. Millions of people are walking around on stuff like heroin with cocaine, and you would never know it. they don't look like the stereo type heroin addict all shaky and slimy living under a bridge. There normal people with jobs and families.
You know you can kill yourself by drinking two much water, I think it's called potassium shock or something, drink enough water and you piss all the potassium out of your body and die. Maybe we need to rethink the water laws, or start the war on water abuse.
I somehow doubt that legalizing drugs would cause there to be more drugs than there are right now. As it is you can drive down the street in almost any town USA and buy any drug you want. It's like the stuff was growing on trees. And no one is checking ID's, or verifying prescriptions...
You can read my latest post on the issue for my general opinion on the drug war.
The drug war is counterproductive. It works against keeping kids off crank.
Your right about that. I had almost forgot about meth. I've seen someone do the meth dive too. not a pretty sight at all.
