Official count: Over 1000 civilians killed in Lebanon; Israel suspends larger ground offensive

More than 1,000 civilians have been killed in Lebanon since Israel launched its massive offensive on July 12, an official body has said. At least 1,002 civilians, 30 percent of them children under 12, have died as well as 30 soldiers and policemen, the state relief committee said Thursday, while 3,580 have been injured.

Hizbullah has announced the death of 58 of its fighters, while seven fighters of the Shiite Amal movement, have been killed during the course of the four-week-old offensive.

The pro-Syrian Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) has also announced the death of one of its fighters. Four United Nations observers and one member of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have been killed.

In 30 days, 915,792 people have been displaced, including 220,000 Lebanese who left the country, according to the government High Relief Commission. The figure also includes 100,000 foreigners or dual nationals who have been evacuated, according to an AFP count.

Meanwhile, Israel will hold back a new ground offensive in Lebanon until the weekend to give cease-fire efforts another chance, senior government officials said Thursday, according to the AP. The deeper push into Lebanon was approved by Israel's Security Cabinet.

A senior government official conveyed Thursday that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has decided to hold off on the offensive until the weekend.

But prospects for a quick cease-fire resolution by the U.N. Security Council were unclear, with the United States and France still divided over a timetable for an Israeli pullout from Lebanon. France wants Israel to withdraw once hostilities end, while the United States backs Israel's insistence on staying in southern Lebanon until a strong international force is deployed, which could take weeks or months.

On Thursday, Israeli missiles hit Beirut proper for the first time, damaging a historic lighthouse. Warplanes also dropped leaflets over northern Lebanon, also a first, warning trucks off a coastal road linking Lebanon to Syria.

Do you really think people out there believe this crap? You know I decided today to start searching news for this fucking hizbollah war, and you will just not believe some of the crap like this that I have found. I mean 58 hizbollah fighters killed in 4 weeks of fighting. Well I know exactly where that is actually the truth, the APU. Only there is something so outrageous even remotely possible. I am starting to believe that there have been 58 civilians killed and 1000 fighters.
