Iraq - Rescue
Soldiers from the Minot-based 164th Engineer Combat Battalion and the Missouri-based 110th Engineer Battalion rescued the boy on May 1st.
The soldiers were on a mission to clear roadside bombs near Balad, Iraq. As they were crossing a canal, the soldiers saw an Iraqi man and a youth waving their arms for help. The soldiers then saw a boy drowning in the canal.
Specialist Kyle Mueller is a former lifeguard from Minot. The Guard says Mueller removed his protective armor and dove into the water after the boy.
Sergeant Guy Stevens, of Minot, also dove into the water to help. Together, they pulled the boy to shore.
The military says the boy didn't appear to be breathing -- so soldiers put the boy face down and forced water out of his lungs.
Soldiers say they stayed with the boy until he was fully conscious. The military says the soldiers returned to their vehicles and patrolled for roadside bombs for another seven hours.

It's not easy but someone has to do it.
