Verizon Helps Troops Call Home from Iraq on Holidays

Verizon Business will be offering military families and loved ones the opportunity to remain connected through free phone calls for the weeks around the spring and summer holidays for U.S. military personnel stationed in Iraq.

The telecom giant is one of the major communications provider to the U.S. Department of Defense and the U.S. Department of State providing both the free calls and Internet access for the U.S. Armed Forces personnel for Easter and Passover, April 11 – 17; Mother’s Day in the United States, May 9 – 16; Father’s Day in the United States, June 13 – 20; and U.S. Independence Day, June 28 – July 7.

"For our troops far from home, nothing is more comforting than to hear the sound of a loved one's voice," said Jerry Edgerton, group president for federal government and system integrators at Verizon Business. "Verizon Business is proud to support the women and men stationed abroad making daily sacrifices for our country. We want to help them stay connected with loved ones at home, whether it's calling mom on Mother's Day or on the 4th of July."

Verizon Business deployed to Iraq a mobile communications facility comprised of phones and Internet connectivity, enabling military personnel to make calls and send e-mail. Throughout the year, Verizon Business makes technology, resources and employee support available to military personnel and their families around the world, including donations of pre-paid calling cards to U.S. troops traveling, stationed or recuperating in the United States and to their families.

Verizon Business has recently made news as the company expands its FiOS TV service. Just last month, the telecom announced it expanded the service in Hillsborough County to now provide more than 22,000 households in the Keystone and Alafia areas with a broad range of programming choices. The move follows Verizon's recent service expansion to the city of Temple Terrace and southern Manatee County in Florida. In total, over 55,000 households in Hillsborough County will now have access to FiOS TV. The service is delivered over an all-digital, fiber network on a mass scale, to millions of individual homes and businesses.
