SHIA DEATH SQUADS TARGET IRAQI GAYS -- U.S. Indifferent

"Following a death-to-gays fatwa issued last October by Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani (left), death squads of the Badr Corps have been systematically targeting gay Iraqis for persecution and execution, gay Iraqis say. But when they ask for help and protection from U.S. occupying authorities in the “Green Zone,” gay Iraqis are met with indifference and derision."

Thanks for the info. Eventually I'm going to do a post on the Ayatollah Scarecrow, as Ladybird calls him.

And keep up the good work and thanks for your contribution to the Blogosphere.

Call me insensitive--but if you saw people being killed for any one of a number of arbitrary reasons, not the least of which is the fact that one may be American, and a guy presents himself to an American soldier as a special potential target deserving of extraordinary protection because of his sense of style, if you didn't see the dark humor in that you are way to serious of a person to be taken seriously. I take it up the ass so give me asylum? Iraq would quickly become one big YMCA. The camels would mourn in their newfound solitude. Really, Iraq has a looooooooong way to go before they get to the gay marriage debate. When such things become truly important, we will know we have won....I guess.

Thanks MG

So Will your telling me that if an Iraqi comes up to the MNF and tells them that he's been targeted by the militias for execution they should not do anything?
Nothing at all, not even offer him/her a ride out of town, or start some investigation, maybe try to catch or neutralize the perpetrators, or anything like that.

I don't know what their reaction should or would be, MT. Everybody in Iraq is targetted and/or is targetting someone for one of a growing number of reasons. Is persecution due to sexual preference more significant than persecution of someone for ethnic, sectarian, tribal, geographical, economic, educational, criminal motivations? Our guys need a score card to keep up--maybe a color coded man-dress system so they can tell why this guy is being threatened by those guys. The whole story sounds queer to me. How many 'gay' Iraqis have approached US soldiers for protection and announced their sexual preference while doing so? Trying to imagine it and, I can't help it, I can see how their reaction might be to laugh. But that's just me. What are they supposed to do? Give him asylum in the US or the People's Republic of San Francisco? Any gay Iraqi who meets the offical criteria denoting gayness is given automatic legal residency? Got any ideas for the checklist? Cubans got one foot on dry land, what will we give gay Iraqis as a clear standard to meet?

It's clear that this is agenda driven bullshit meant to demean the don't ask don't tell Army. But why not pile on the current theme? They are just torturers and baby killers, so what could we expect? Let's just add to the long list of things that the US military has failed to miraculously cure in a sectarian, tribalistic, totalitarian, gay-bashing, Christian-Jew hating, dog kicking culture in Iraq that so many find so easy to blame ourslves for? I don't think I am alone in my amazement of what a thouroughly screwed up culture has been revealed in Iraq. Even they can't believe it. It all has to be due to America, otherwise they would have to truly hate themselves and be hated even more by their children. Why put yourself through the burden of personal responsibility when you have a US flag you can burn instead? Works for lots of people everywhere for many occaisions...

Well Will maybe if the MNF was more proactive there would not be everyone targeting everyone. Once you allow someone to be a target you have allowed everyone to be a target. I posted this because I see it as another clue to the ever spiraling out of control that is Iraq. And of course because it jives with the position I took over at Healing Iraq, when Zeyad posted about Sistani's kill all the gays fatwa. I told Zeyad that "red staters" would not respond to his post, that instead of discrediting Shi'a he was in fact doing the opposite as this group hate gay and would just love to implement the same thing here back at home. And what would you know the next thing I see is a story on just that, Americans helping to kill gays. Unfortunately for the gay's I know that most republicans are rooting for the militias, and are probably keeping a score card.

Oh jeeeeze........I'd feel stupid even responding to that crap. Self appointed martyrdom is boring.
