U.S. airstrikes in Iraq kill suspected al-Qaeda member (1st Update)

"Baghdad - Airstrikes by U.S. forces Wednesday in northwestern Iraq killed a man suspected of being a high-level member of the al-Qaeda terror network and destroyed three militant safe houses, a military statement said.

The air force strikes hit three houses believed to be used by al- Qaeda in Husayba, less than 10 kilometres from the Syrian border, killing a man identified as Abu Asim.

The U.S. military suspected Abu Asim of coordinating efforts to smuggle foreign fighters and suicide bombers from Syria into Iraq."
