Violence sweeps Iraq ahead of referendum

"BAGHDAD, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- A series of explosions rocked Baghdad Thursday, including a suicide car bomb attack which injured eight people, police said.

They said the suicide bomber targeted a convoy of four-wheel drive vehicles which are usually used by foreign security and protection agencies in charge of guarding Iraqi and foreign officials.

None of the convoy passengers was hurt in the blast, which mainly hit Iraqi passersby.

At least 25 people were killed and 96 others injured Wednesday night in a suicide operation that targeted a Shiite mosque in the region of Hulla south of the Iraqi capital."
