New U.S. base at Syria-Iraq border

"RAWAH, Iraq (UPI) 31 July - U.S. troops will now battle insurgents at the suspected source as the first base at the Iraq-Syria border is opened.

Intelligence officials believe that many foreign insurgents are making their way into Iraq via the Syrian border, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The base, three miles from Rawah, will house 1,800 U.S. troops near a route that connects the border to roads leading to Mosul and Baghdad."

Finally! I have only been calling for such a base from the day after the invasion.

If they had built such a base early on, the supply lines would have been over extended. You don't set up a fort in the middle of a hostile desert unless you want it to be over-run. Now, they have reasonable command of the hinterland.

Well Don, you may be right about the supply lines issues. It's just that from the beginning I thought that we should turn the tanks around and point them towards the borders to protect the Iraqis from being infiltrated by the jihadis.. but no one listened to me. Maybe they had their reasons, maybe they were looking for a duck hunt, but whatever I'm glade that they are finally going to protect the borders, as this should have an impact on the violence that goes on in the interior.. my guess.
