Soldier David Grout dies after attack on return to Britain from Afghanistan
A soldier who was attacked on the day he returned from Afghanistan has died in hospital.
David Grout, 22, had been back in his home town of Middlesbrough for only seven hours when he was knocked unconscious by a single punch as he stood outside a club where he was celebrating his return with his family.
The married father of one suffered bleeding to the brain in last Tuesday’s attack. He was put into an induced coma after emergency surgery but died yesterday.
Signaller Grout joined the Army as soon as he left school. He returned to Britain last week after serving for two months in Helmand province with the Royal Signals.
An Army spokesman said the news of his death had been received “with deep regret and great sadness” by 4th Mechanized Brigade.
The soldier was enjoying a homecoming drink with his mother and stepfather at the Eston Institute when he went outside for a cigarette. He was said to have been excited about the thought of being reunited with his wife, Kerry, and their 20-month-old son later in the day.
Witnesses who saw him outside the club at 6.40pm said he was confronted by two men in their early 20s. After a brief conversation, one of them punched him and he fell to the ground.
Detectives believe that Signaller Grout knew his attackers, who stayed with him for some time as he lay unconscious. The attack is not thought to have any connection to his Army background.
After Cleveland Police appealed for the two men to come forward, a 19-year-old local man handed himself in. He was arrested, questioned and later released on bail.
A member of the Grout family said: “He’d only been back in the country for a few hours when this happened. He made it through a warzone unscathed to come back and be put in hospital by scumbags. If they think they are big men, they should get over to Afghanistan and see what real men are like.”
