Diana West: "Development or Die" vs. "Submit or Die": Who Wins?

I really feel for Captain Mark Moretti, above, holding hands with this Pashtun tribal primitive -- men holding hands being a "custom" among "friends" in the region, according to the accompanying Washington Post story.

These two men, infidel and jihadist, are not "friends" by any stretch.

Moretti was photographed carrying out the distressing mission of arranging a truce for the US retreat from the Korengal Valley, accomplished this week. The deal he put to the "tribal elders" was this: If we (US) can leave this (pointless) outpost without jihadist attack, we won't destroy the 6,000 gal. of fuel we still have inside our about-to-be-abandoned base. Or, to put it another way, we'll pay you 6,000 gal. of fuel to retreat without incident. And I'll hold your hand if I must.

The story runs under the headline: "US retreat from Afghan valley marks recognition of blunder."

I'm afraid it does no such thing. That is, the blunder recognized is the futility of maintaining this blood-costly outpost. The blunder that still goes unrecognized is the blunder of the "hearts and minds" counterinsurgency doctrine that kept it open for so long.

Ain't that America........? I propose the American Age of Retreat as the label for the current decade--- or two. Or three.....Retreat is the theme, from space to combat.

It's really the Age of Obama and his jihad against American exceptionalism.

I'd go on about strategy and redeploying to meet the next set of goals, but I don't think I believe it myself.

If it walks like a duck...

At least I can tell my grandkids one day, I was there. I was US Citizen, back when that meant something.

Obama is only accelerating the decline that has been on the horizon for decades. Unless we are willing to accept significantly lower living standards now, they are going to be forced on us in the future due to insurmountable debt service and unfunded mandates. In fact, the future is now. We're living it. The date when fed pensions, union pensions, and SS and Med are cut across the board--- well, how bad will it have to get is the only question. Either through inflation and the end of indexing or through outright cuts---- there is no avoiding it. I believe we are taxed beyond our tolerance right now. I have heard people warn against it for over 30 years, and the day is here just a little faster than they predicted. I think my grandkids may see better days, but my kids and I will suffer to make that happen. I don't think we'll become Norte Mexico.
