Spam alert

When Taliban soldiers shot an helicopter carrying food rations for English frontline troops, army chef corporal Liam Francis had to improvise and feed his fellow soldiers Spam, of which he had hundreds of cans, for six weeks. The chef said:

"We were on compo (compound rations) for six weeks and we only had one menu – Spam. I was surprised what we could do: sweet and sour Spam, Spam fritters, Spam carbonara, Spam Stroganoff and Spam stir fry."

One can only hope Liam Francis had internet access, for the official Spam website has made available hundreds of recipes using Spam products. Spam turkey wraps, Spam chilli, Spambled Denver sandwiches and Spam with scrambled eggs are among the recipes featured – not bad, considering that the classic variety of Spam is chopped pork shoulder meat with ham meat, with salt, water, sugar and sodium nitrite – ironically immortalised by the celebrated Monty Python sketch (above), but even memorialised by an exhibit in the Smithsonian museum. Further gourmet Spam delights were served up by last year's Spam Cook of the Year winner, as the Guardian's Word of Mouth blog reported.
