Toasting Good News From The Iraq War - Finally »
After nearly seven years of grueling combat in Iraq and 4,689 coalition forces killed, according to iCasualties.org — all but 318 were Americans — there was finally some truly great news out of the war on the first day of the new decade.
There were no U.S. combat deaths in Iraq in December — for the first time since the March 2003 invasion.
Think about that for a moment.
Make it a moment of silent reflection.
This was the first month in the history of Operation Iraqi Freedom without any U.S. military being killed in combat, U.S. Forces-Iraq said in a statement today, though it noted there were three non-combat deaths. They were: Army Pfc. Jaiciae Pauley, Army Pvt. Jhanner Tello and Marine Sgt. Ralph Frietas.
“We enter the new year with mixed emotions. While we are thankful that no troops were killed in action in December, we are equally mindful of those who have lost their lives while serving our nation,” Army Gen. Ray Odierno, commander of U.S. forces, said.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to their families, and all that have lost a loved one in Iraq,” he added.
On New Year’s Day, that’s something worth drinking to.
