Indiana ag unit believes it aided Afghan farmers

INDIANAPOLIS - A group of Indiana National Guard soldiers believe they helped sow the seeds of improved relations with the people of Afghanistan during their 10-month mission helping farmers there improve the production and marketing of their crops.

The unit of about 60 soldiers returned to the state last week. During their time in Afghanistan, the advisers focused on teaching farmers and others about more modern agricultural practices.

Maj. Shawn Gardner says the unit's work helped empower Afghan farmers with knowledge to better feed their families.

A second Indiana Guard agriculture team left for Afghanistan last month, with the aim of teaching pest management. A third Indiana ag team is to begin training next summer.
