Army: Galesburg soldier had adult pornography, violating rule
GALESBURG —
Army authorities now are saying that Spc. Billy Miller of Galesburg had adult pornography on his computer as well as alleged child pornography.
Miller's tour in Afghanistan has been involuntarily extended while the Army investigates charges of possession of child pornography and failing to obey a general order.
His parents, Rodney and Terri Miller, said last week that the child pornography charge stemmed from innocent pictures of Miller's 4-year-old niece found on his laptop.
But now military officials say the failing to obey a general order charge relates to pornography involving adults found on the Illinois National Guard soldier's computer. Soldiers are not allowed to possess pornography in Afghanistan, military spokesman Master Sgt. Thomas Clementson said from Bagram Air Force Base in Afghanistan.
Rodney and Terri Miller said they only learned of the adult pornography charge Tuesday morning.
Rodney Miller said whether there is any truth to the charges against his son, he just wants to see him brought home. Billy Miller has been in Afghanistan for 17 months.
"Why don't they bring him back home, read him his rights and start the trial," Rodney Miller said. "I'm not saying the kid is innocent or guilty, but let's see what evidence they have against him."
In a statement last week, a military spokesman in Bagram said there was no timeline for how long it would take to process the specialist's case.
He was charged by the Army on Jan. 5, four months after he was told that his tour of duty was being involuntarily extended. Since then, Billy Miller has been on active duty in Afghanistan.
An officer has been appointed to determine if Spc. Miller should face a court-martial or a trial or if his case should be tried at all.
The Miller family sent pictures of Spc. Miller's niece to GateHouse News Service last week. They are believed to be the pictures connected to the child pornography charge. Those pictures show the girl in a swimsuit.
Miller's case has attracted national headlines after being picked up by numerous newspapers, radio stations and TV shows.
Spc. Miller could face 10 years in prison if his case goes to trial and he is found guilty of possessing child pornography. His Galva-based unit returned home from Afghanistan in September.
