The newly elected provincial council in Wassit province voted few days ago on banning female members from attending the council's meetings without a relative male companion, a Mahram, an unmarriageable relative.

The decision is the first in Iraq that limit women's participation to this limit and is based on an extreme explanation the Mahram concept.

Since decades, the conditions of women in Iraq are different from their conditions in other Arab countries. In the 50's of last century, an Iraqi woman was the first minister in Arab countries. Iraqi woman was the pioneer in many careers like law, politic, poet, journalism, painting, engineering, arts and other career.

What I want to say is that, we didn’t know legal obstacles that might prevent development of women in Iraq in the past.

In Iraq like other society we have families who encourage women to progress and other families who don’t allow to their daughter to participate in political life. After the invasion in 2003, we came to apply the quota system that determined the participation of women in parliament that gave women no less than 25 percent.

Will the parliament force the female parliament members, the 25 percent of the parliament, to bring Mahram with them?!!

Or even more they might like us to go schools with MAHRAM.
