Ladybird: Barzani’s unachievable dream of a Kurdish army
Ace Mideast Correspondent Ladybird delves into the issues, others fear to tread:
During his meeting with US Army Lt. Gen. Michael Barbero, Barzani said: “one of my dreams to see a unified army of Kurdistan”, a direct reaction came from Maliki’s spokesman Al-Dabagh saying: “This will remain a dream”.
In his last article on Asia Times “Maliki makes his move on Kirkuk issue”, Sami Moubayed argued that Maliki will Barzani’s dream come true.
But for these reasons, Barzani’s dream is not achievable:
Last information from Kurdistan showed the rise of Barzani’s KDP influence stationed in the Arbil, on the other hand the decline Talabani’s PUK influence, in the Sulaymaniyah.
Despite the increase of Brazani’s influence, both parties agreed to share the power in the Kurdish region based on the following:
- Brazani to lead the Kurdish government, and Talabani to take the Iraqi presidency post.
- Sharing the security and military services. Peshmerga unites led by Barzani to control Arbil (west Kurdistan), while the Peshmerga unites led by Talabani to control Sulaymaniyah (East Kurdistan).
Since Barzani will be the commander-in-chief of the new formed Kurdish army, many Talabani’s Peshmerga members will shift their loyalty to the powerful Barzani side. Barzani’s terms and conditions to create the unified Kurdish army, will weaken Talibani’s position and his party.
There are many questions, which will remain without answers:
What is the definition of the “enemy” according to the Kurdish army? Is it the Turkish army, the Iranian or the Syrian army, or is it the Iraqi army? Cont...
