Grand ayatollah says OIC must break silence over Shia massacre in Yemen
TEHRAN – Grand Ayatollah Ali Safi Golpaygani has announced that the silence of the Organization of the Islamic Conference toward a brutal suppression of Yemeni Shias by the country’s army is unacceptable.
“We ask the Organization of the Islamic conference why is it silent toward war and fratricide in Yemen and does not take an action?” the ayatollah asked in a statement which was released by his office on Wednesday.
Why the OIC is not trying a government who is “targeting its defenseless people from air and land” and does not tolerate their religion which is based on Quranic principles? the ayatollah further asked.
The ayatollah added, “With great sorrow certain neighboring countries are cooperating with them (Yemeni armed forces) in these coldblooded crimes”.
He also denounced the silence of the so-called international human rights organizations in the face of the ongoing brutalities in Yemen and asked the OIC to break its silence and strongly protest the behavior of Yemeni rulers against their country’s Shias and condemn their acts.
The ayatollah went on to say that today Muslims are in need of unity and peace more than any other time and the “weakness of Muslims in a country is a weakness of all Muslims”.
He said the OIC bears great responsibility in extinguishing the flames of fire and the “least shortcoming” by the organization is considered “treason against Islam”.
Ayatollah Golpaygani said the organization must not ignore the destructive “rifts in the name of Islam in the Islamic world.”
“The massacre of Muslims in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and other places at the hands of Muslims in extremely horrifying and inhumane ways has put Islam under the question in the views of the people in the world.”
In sharp contrast to the Prophet (S) whose approach was based on compassion such acts send a “cruel, brutal and terrorist picture of Muslims to the world”.
The Yemeni army has launched attacks on its Shia population who say they are trying to reverse the political, economic and religious marginalization of their Zaydi community.
The group has also accused Saudi Arabia of supporting the Yemeni armed forces by allowing them to launch attacks from its territory.
According to the BBC, the group said Saudi jets had bombed several villages on the Yemeni side of the border, killing two women and wounding a child.
The Zaydi Shia community are a minority in Yemen but make up the majority in the north of the country.
The Yemeni armed forces launched offensive on the group in August which has precipitated a new wave of intense fighting. Aid agencies say tens of thousands of people have been displaced as the result of the war.
