Pendleton sailor, reputedly gay, found dead on base

In Camp Pendleton north of Oceanside, a death investigation is under way after a sailor was found dead in a guard shack in a case that has overtones of being a hate crime.

Activists in the gay community citing sources familiar with the death of August Provost, 29, of Houston, Texas, say the man was killed during an argument with another sailor over sexual orientation.

Provost's body was found on the west side of the Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base around 3:30 a.m., a spokesman said.

Base authorities said the case is being investigated as a possible homicide and say they are holding a "person of interest" in the case but his name is being withheld.

Provost's boyfriend, Kaether Cordero, told the San Diego Union-Tribune that the dead sailor was openly gay but sought to keep his private life quite.

“People who he was friends with, I knew that they knew,” Cordero, speaking to the Union-Tribune from Houston, said. “He didn't care that they knew. He trusted them.”

Provost was assigned to Assault Craft Unit 5, a hovercraft unit.

That is what you get when you allow institutionalized hate. They should charge the entire command structure.
