Iraq gives $2.5 million for Fulbrights
BAGHDAD (AP) - The Iraqi government has pledged $2.5 million to expand the opportunities for Iraqi students to participate in the Fulbright program.
The U.S. Embassy says the Iraqi funding will double from 35 to 70 the number of scholarships available to Iraqis in the American government educational exchange program.
Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh says the program will help forge enduring ties between American and Iraqi institutions.
He appeared Wednesday with U.S. Ambassador Christopher Hill at a ceremony in Baghdad to announce the Iraqi contribution.
The grants are named for the late U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright. They provide foreign students opportunities for graduate-level studies in the United States.
