US close to agreement to transfer Yemeni detainees in Guantanamo to

The United States is close to an agreement to transfer Yemeni al-Qaeda detainees from Guantanamo to a minimum-security facility in Saudi Arabia, said media sources.

Officials said the Defense Department has reached an agreement in principle with Saudi Arabia and Yemen for the release of more than 100 al-Qaeda detainees, World Tribune’s website reported.

They said the suspected al-Qaeda agents, all from Yemen and detained at the U.S. Navy prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, would be sent to Saudi Arabia for what was termed “rehabilitation.” Officials said the Yemenis would be held in a minimum-security facility, but under electronic monitor at all times. In 2008, several Saudis at the rehabilitation center escaped and fled to Yemen. The center was said to have also contained 117 Saudis inmates released from Guantanamo.

Yemeni Deputy Minister of Foreign Muhy al-Dhabbi did not deny the story, but only said, “No comment,” in response to the Yemen Observer’s questions. With regard to the United States intention to hand over the Yemeni detainees in Guantanamo to a center for rehabilitation in Saudi Arabia, Deputy Prime Minister for Defense and Security Affairs and Minister of Local Administration Rashad al-Alimi said that the U.S will agree to send Yemeni detainees to Saudi Arabia under pretext that there is a rehabilitation center there and that families of many of the detainees are living in Saudi Arabia.

However, he said Yemen has renewed its demands to the US administration to hand over the Yemeni detainees to Yemen, affirming that the government is in the process of establishing a rehabilitation center in Yemen for incorporating them into society.

A day later, Yemen renewed its claim to the American administration to release Yemeni detainees in Guantanamo and Bagram base and to hand them over to Yemen.
Yemen’s ambassador to United States Abdul-Wahab al-Hajri held talks with the US Attorney General Eric H. Holder on ways of boosting the bilateral cooperation between Yemen and US in the security and judicial fields in addition to combating terrorism and organized crime.

Al-Hajri welcomed President Obama’s decision to close the Guantanamo
Bay detention camp. Al-Hajri renewed demands to free Sheikh Mohammed al-Moayad and his companion Mohammed Zayed, who have spent six years in US prisons in difficult situations. He also offered complete medical care to
Sheikh al-Moayad.

The American law team concerned with shutting the Guantanamo detention camp is currently studying files of detainees’ cases. Holder promised to look into the Yemeni government’s requests and suggestions. He pointed out that the American administration is about to study the case of Sheikh al-Moayad and his companion and would contact Yemen with regard to their cases soon. In the meeting, Holder praised Yemen’s efforts and successes in combating terrorism.
