I hate to talk about myself or my family. But this is just too much. My mother has Alzheimers, it has been progressing for the last few years, she been under the care of Humana, I don't know the exact details but she gets access to the clinic because the government pays the bills and I think she has monthly supplemental insurance plan.

But here is the thing in the last few years the clinic has done nothing for her, they make an appointment, cancel the appointment, make an excuses, and do nothing. So out of desperation we took her in to see the old trusty witch doctor. No she is not really a witch doctor, but the difference is minimal. She is also a trusted friend of the family, and a private unlicensed doctor. You have to pay to get in and see her, and you have to agree to buy her treatments, which usually are natural medicines and diets, and tea's. Awful teas...

Anyway we took her in and in just one visit we got the names of two medications, one for the alzheimers, and one for the nerves. But with no real prescription the local pharmacy would only dispense the alzheimers pills (Aricept)..and we paid $160.00 for 30 tablets.

My question is, why did the government paid clinic ignore her for over two years. Is this the model health reform Obama wants to impose on all of us? Was the clinic working on a quota system, and there was just nothing left for my mom? How is it that just one visit to the underground private medical system could do what years of government health care could not. I keep asking myself why the clinic avoided my mom like that, could it be that the medication was expensive so they just ignored her to save money? I don't know.

Right now I feel like torching that hole building to the ground. But I wont. I will reserve my energy for something more useful.

I can report that after three days of the medication, she made a bed for the first time in years. I don't know if she will get better of not, but I do have hope. Just not the Obama kind.

Sorry to hear that, MT. Hopefully it is being diagnosed early because there are some drugs and therapies being prescribed and developed that can delay the onset. I have had some of this going on in my own family and know its a terrible thing to deal with, but it can bring about unexpected good as well, at times. Hang in there.

What the heck is with this Humana clinic? If she has Medicare with a supplemental, why the heck would they cancel her out? You are right on as far as government health care. It won't be a change for the better.

Sorry to read about this, MT. As you've no doubt encountered, Alzheimers is a familiy disease. Hang in there and hope you get quality information and support to deal with behavior as it progresses.

Thank you Cathy B

The thing is she did not get her insurance canceled, they just ignored her and did not treat her. After the diagnosis of Alzheimer's they just sort of put her on a shelf. No treatment, no medication nothing. So we had to turn to someplace else to seek answers. But she is still in the clinic and no doubt they are still being paid.

Well, it sounds as if you're experiencing a preview of medical treatment policies to come in the next few years. The president's first choice of Daschle to Health and Human Services would promote this type of elder care, just as Daschle discusses in his book. Those over 65 will see less and less quality and more restrictive health care. Even though Daschle himself will land in this age group, the rules and laws passed do not apply to the elite ruling class. We shall see how the number two H&HS pick tackles the job.

Take care, MT.
