Huckabee: Stimulus is 'anti-religious'

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee warned supporters Tuesday that the $828 billion stimulus package is “anti-religious.”

In an e-mail that was also posted on his blog ahead of the Senate’s passage, Huckabee wrote: “The dust is settling on the ‘bipartisan’ stimulus bill and one thing is clear: It is anti-religious.”

The former Republican presidential candidate pointed to a provision in both the House and Senate versions banning higher education funds in the bill from being used on a “school or department of divinity.”

“You would think the ACLU drafted this bill,” Huckabee said. “For all of the talk about bipartisanship, this Congress is blatantly liberal.”

“Emily’s List, radical environmental groups, etc. all have a seat at the decision making table in Washington these days,” he continued. “Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid are in charge and they are working with an equally ‘progressive’ President Obama (remember his voting record is more liberal than Ted Kennedy!).”

In the e-mail, Huckabee concedes that there is little that conservatives can do in the near term, but advocated mobilization to defeat those “masquerading as ‘conservative Democrats.’”

“This is the opening round of the Democrats’ campaign for big government,” he wrote. “We cannot afford to sit round one out, because if we do, they will only become more emboldened and their grab for power more audacious and damaging to our country and our freedoms.”

Watch Obama’s reaction to the Senate stimulus vote:

Politico

Someone check the locks. God doesn't need government stimulus, he can create his own.

But this is telling of just how did the most liberal democrat win an election? No it wasn't a question stupid.

I would bet that a poll asking if religious studies should be specifically banned from receiving any of the billions of pork for education, the answer would be overwhelmingly NO. Had republicans been in control and specifically banned the use of funds for homosexual studies and training of abortionists, you would see that differently. Don't give me the constitutional argument since that would just be silly and since fed funds have been used for universities with religious studies departments from the day the fed government began sticking their noses into education--- which truly is unconstitutional. This is just more of the leftist overreaching that will see them soundly defeated in two to four years--- but it may come to late.

Oh please, pull out the violins....

You know well that there should be no funding of religion.

So your argument is that because they did it to us, we are going to do it back, and double?

That's like the argument, they gave Bush a stimulus bill, why not Obama. I find those argument null and void

The STUDY of religion is a much more valid and important subject than most taught at most universities. Many of them are truly ridiculous and of no value to anyone or anything except the bottom line of university budgets and the GPA of students. There is no reason why it shouldn't be afforded at least as much consideration. Religion is one of the most influential areas of human society in history, modern society, and the future. Only bigotry would lead someone to single it out this way. It in no way establishes a state religion or requires any belief or lack of belief among citizens. It's just the promotion of the understanding of one of the most important features of the evolution of human society. Why does that bother you?

It bothers me that the federal government has taken over education and screwed it up along with every other thing it ever touches.

The validity of the study is not in question.
And neither is the study of religions. As you say it's part of our society and history, and or course the old study of comparative religion. Non of these are at issue here. So I have to ask you back, why does it bother you?

Why should I pay for your worship, or why should you pay for mine?

If the issues are construction of new schools, the fact is that the states have fallen down, and someone needs to step up tot he plate and do something about the state of our schools. Not that I approve of any of in a stimulus bill, but we should be ashamed that we have to try to sneak it in, or else it wont get done.

Maybe you are assuming some things from the story and I am assuming others. I'm not sure we really disagree on the basic issue.

What we should be ashamed of is the fact that we know that more money won't solve the issue of incompetence brought on by teacher's unions and federal regulations. There is little local accountability because as with all things, we are giving our responsibility to the federal government. That's the shame.

I just thought about something, if Obama brings home the troops, where are they all going to get jobs right now?

Actually, he isn't talking about lowering the numbers of troops. In fact, he claimed he would add two brigades, as I recall. And cut the military budget by 10% by eliminating weapons programs. So, if the troops come home I suppose the aeronautical engineers that can't get work will be making hamburgers on military bases. Or something...
