Hamas asks Obama to treat Palestinians fairly
GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - A Hamas official says he is the author of a letter to President Barack Obama asking the leader to treat Palestinians fairly and be open-minded in dealing with Hamas.
The letter was written by Ahmed Yousef, an adviser to Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh. The letter was given to U.N. officials, who passed it to Sen. John Kerry during a one-day visit to Gaza on Thursday.
Christopher Gunness, spokesman for the U.N. Relief and Works Agency, said at the time only that he believed the letter was from Hamas.
Hamas is shunned by the U.S. and others as a terror group. The letter urges Obama to be open-minded in dealing with the Islamic militants.
Yousef said Saturday that the letter was endorsed by the Hamas government.
