Russia hopes US will not seek NATO expansion
MOSCOW (AP) - Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov says Russia hopes the new U.S. president will not raise tensions by making Ukrainian and Georgian membership in NATO a priority.
Lavrov says he believes the U.S. and Russia need an agenda that unites rather than divides them. He says that President-elect Barack Obama will face the overwhelming problem of the global financial crisis from his first days in office and the U.S. should concentrate on tackling that crisis rather than expanding the country's geopolitical influence.
Lavrov told reporters Friday at his annual January news conference that he hopes for improvements in U.S. foreign policy under the new president, and that Russia and the U.S. can cooperate closely.
