Rebels: government planes bomb northern Darfur

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Rebels and aid workers say government airplanes have dropped bombs along a northern strip in Darfur. It's the first such report of violence in weeks.

A spokesman for the rebel Justice and Equality Movement says his group was the target. He claims the government bombed villages and water wells overnight and Thursday morning along a strip stretching 125 miles, or 200 kilometers.

Abu Bakr Hamed accused the government of causing chaos ahead of an expected international court decision against Sudan's president for Darfur war crimes.

The government didn't immediately respond. It wasn't known if there were casualties in the remote area.

Aid workers in the region said they heard bombings but had no details. They said JEM troops were spotted in the strip Wednesday.
