Broncos Forever

"The OV-10 Bronco was one of the finest counter-insurgency aircraft ever built. Maneuverable, rugged and with excellent handling characteristics, in U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps service the Bronco fought in Vietnam and the 1991 Persian Gulf War before the last was retired in 1995. Several foreign countries still operate the aircraft in guerrilla wars, including The Philippines, which launched a Bronco in an air raid this week.

Now Boeing is proposing to re-launch Bronco production, with an updated cockpit and sensors and, presumably, better self-defense capabilities. (The Marines lost several Broncos over Kuwait due to poor self-defense systems.) Springbored has the scoop, gleaned from Inside the Air Force. “That’s a sweet plane,” Springbored writes, “capable of serving in low-threat areas … and it can land on an amphibious flattop. Just don’t go too crazy goldplating it. And build ‘em fast.”"
